"Lord, make me a channel of Thy peace
That where there is hatred, I may bring love,
That where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness,
That where there is discord, I may bring harmony,
That where there is error, I may bring truth,
That where there is doubt, I may bring faith,
That where there is despair, I may bring hope,
That where there are shadows, I may bring light,
That where there is sadness, I may bring joy."
-St. Francis of Assisi
Let me begin with a story.
Once upon a time, in the schoolroom of an ordinary
little home, there lived eight children: Temper, Impatience, Bossy,
Anger, Hateful, Jealousy, Pride, and Conflict. Unlike the happily ever after stories
of fairytale books, these little children loved to quarrel and fight
and argue and bicker amongst themselves. Their names, as you can see,
befit their character perfectly. These eight children were constantly
at war with one another—sometimes two against one, or seven ganging up
against one, or five against two—and it seemed quite a hopeless case of
self-love: each esteeming self above all the others. What a horrible way to begin a story, aye?
